Azimio la Umoja had decided to remove Sabina Chege from her position earlier on. She consequently, filed a case in a Kiambu Court to challenge the move by Azimio la Umoja. The case she filed was, however, thrown out of court on Monday.

She, therefore, lost her position and is set to be replaced by Embakasi West MP, Mark Muriithi Mwenje. He is to be the new Deputy Minority Whip in the 13th Parliament.

“We now demand that the Speaker, Moses Wetangula ratifies the decision to allow Hon. Mark Mwenje to serve,” a statement by Jubilee Party read in part.

There has been a prolonged legal battle over leadership in the Jubilee Party since the year began. The Chege-led faction fighting the Uhuru-led faction to control the party and the millions in its kitty. Most members of the party in support of the Chege-led faction are equally in support of the Kenya Kwanza government. The others are in support of the Azimio party.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta indicated that he would not quit the party, maintaining his allies in key positions. This was after the fallout with Chege and Kanini Kega group, who have since moved to work with Kenya Kwanza. After releasing this statement, many people responded harshly with some threatening to take away his retirement package credited to him for being a former president of Kenya.

Attempts to Oust Sabina Chege

On May 4, the Azimio Coalition tried to replace Sabina Chege from leadership but failed. Moses Wetangula stopped the move by making a ruling that the coalition had not yet furnished the house with a replacement. She therefore managed to retain her position at the time.

“The communication received from the Minority Party on the decision to oust Sabina Chege is incomplete and therefore does not comply with the requirements of Standing Order 20(A) of the National Assembly,” Wetangula ruled then.

After this ruling was made, the coalition found the Emabaksi West MP to replace Sabina Chege in compliance with the ruling. Chege however, moved outside of court to prevent her ouster.

“Pending hearing and determination of the case, the Honorable Court be pleased to issue such further or other order(s) as it may deem just and expedient for the end of justice,” the court ruled in June

After this ruling, the Speaker, Moses Wetangula, mentioned that Chege would continue in her duties until the courts further decided on the issue of her ouster.

“Honourable members from the foregoing, my hands are tied with regard to the court order that has been brought to my attention,” he stated then.

After the court on Monday, threw out the case filed by Sabina Chege to prevent her ouster, then her role was terminated immediately. She was only performing her duties while the House awaited a ruling by the court which was announced on Monday. Consequently, Sabina Chege lost her position in Parliament and has been replaced by the Embakasi West MP.
