KFS halts eco camp sanctuary development in Ngong forest

Nairobi – The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has suspended the development of an eco camp in the Ngong Forest Sanctuary, following public concerns and procedural questions.

The project, intended to establish a bush eco camp in a designated ecotourism zone, was approved by KFS in accordance with the Ngong Road Forest Green Master Plan. However, the suspension comes amid growing public outcry and calls for greater transparency.

KFS clarified that the development site is a glade a natural clearing within the forest composed of shrubs and grass, not trees. The service emphasized that no trees have been cleared for the project, which was granted a Special Use License under the Forest Conservation and Management Act.

Despite this, KFS acknowledged the need for broader stakeholder engagement. “In response to public concerns, we are convening a roundtable discussion with all relevant parties to address the issues raised and ensure that all perspectives are considered,” a KFS spokesperson stated.

The suspension highlights the delicate balance between promoting sustainable tourism and preserving Kenya’s natural heritage. As discussions continue, the future of the eco camp project remains uncertain, pending outcomes of the forthcoming stakeholder consultations.
