Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan is set to join Barcelona on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of this month.
The 32 year old was offered an extension contract by City but it seems the Spanish club had a more lucrative deal. Pep Guardiola has been vocal on how he intends to keep Gundogan who was integral in the club’s treble win this season.
In a goal event on Monday, Pep told reporters, ”We are interested in renewing his contract and Barcelona are also interested. I hope he stays with us. We are still fighting for him to stay with us. He is a player we want to stay and we will do all we can but we know Barcelona want him.”
According to reports, Gundogan has agreed a two- year contract valid until June 2025 with an option for another year.
Gundogan joined City from Borussia Dortmund in2016 for a reported fee of £ 20m and made 306 appearances for the club where he scored 60 goals.
The influential former Borussia Dortmund midfielder has won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and the Champions League in his seven years at City.
Barcelona fans will be hoping to get their first glimpse of Gundogan in action in pre-season. The Catalans are head to United States in July for friendlies with Juventus, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Juventus.
