The National Police Service (NPS) has released an update on ongoing search and rescue operations following heavy rains and devastating floods that have affected several parts of Kenya, particularly in Nairobi.
In a press statement issued from the Office of the Inspector General on March 10, 2026, the NPS confirmed that its officers, alongside other multi-agency response teams, remain actively deployed on the ground to assist affected communities.
The operations are focused on rescuing stranded residents, evacuating families from high-risk areas, and maintaining security in regions impacted by the flooding.
Death Toll Rises to 49 After Heavy Rains
According to the update, the heavy rains that began on Friday, March 6, 2026, have so far claimed at least 49 lives nationwide.
The National Police Service expressed its condolences to the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time, acknowledging the devastating impact the floods have had on communities across the country.
Authorities say emergency teams continue to search affected areas while supporting displaced residents.
Thousands Displaced as Floods Damage Homes and Infrastructure
The floods have also forced at least 2,624 families to flee their homes, leaving many residents displaced and in need of urgent assistance.
Beyond residential areas, key infrastructure has also suffered damage. The NPS confirmed that 16 police stations across the country were affected by the floods, creating operational challenges for law enforcement.
Despite the setbacks, the police service said measures are being implemented to ensure policing services continue uninterrupted.
Public Urged to Follow Weather Advisories
As heavy rains continue in several regions, the police have urged the public to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department and other government agencies.
Residents are being advised to avoid flooded roads, relocate from vulnerable areas where necessary, and prioritize personal safety as rescue operations continue.
In the statement signed by NPS Director of Corporate Communication and Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the police service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the public during the ongoing emergency.
Authorities say rescue teams will remain deployed as long as the rains persist.
