The 2026 FIFA World Cup has reached the stage where every mistake carries a heavy price. The Round of 16 begins this weekend with three fascinating contests that could reshape the race for football’s biggest prize.

England face perhaps the toughest assignment of the round as they travel to Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, where the hosts will enjoy home support, high altitude and conditions that have unsettled visiting teams for decades. Elsewhere, Brazil continue their pursuit of a sixth world title against Norway, while Morocco hope to keep Africa’s dreams alive against co-hosts Canada.

Morocco seek another step into history

Morocco arrive full of confidence after another disciplined tournament campaign. Ranked among the world’s leading sides, Walid Regragui’s team have once again shown why they are regarded as one of the most organised outfits in international football.

Their progress has not come easily. The Atlas Lions needed a penalty shootout to edge past the Netherlands after a tense goalless contest that stretched into extra time. That victory has strengthened belief that the team can improve on its historic fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Cup.

Canada, managed by Jesse Marsch, earned their place in the last 16 with a narrow victory over South Africa. The North Americans will hope familiar surroundings and passionate support can help them reach the quarter-finals for the first time.

History favours Morocco, who have won both previous meetings between the two nations. Yet knockout football rarely follows the script, and Canada will look to frustrate their opponents before striking on the counter-attack.

Prediction: Canada 0-3 Morocco.

Brazil look to end Norway hoodoo

Brazil have quietly built momentum throughout the tournament. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have combined defensive discipline with attacking flair, scoring freely while conceding little.

The latest evidence came in their victory over Japan, where Gabriel Martinelli struck the decisive goal to send the five-time champions through.

Norway, however, arrive with confidence after claiming their first-ever World Cup knockout victory against Ivory Coast. Much of their hope rests on Erling Haaland, whose goals have carried the Scandinavian side this far.

One statistic offers Norway encouragement. Brazil have never beaten them in four previous meetings, including a memorable World Cup victory in 1998.

Still, this Brazilian side appears more balanced than in recent tournaments. If they maintain their current form, they should have enough quality to end that unwanted record.

Prediction: Brazil 3-2 Norway.

England face hostile atmosphere in Mexico City

Few fixtures promise more drama than England’s meeting with Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.

Mexico have built their campaign around defensive discipline, relentless pressing and swift counter-attacks. Playing before an expectant home crowd, they will believe conditions are firmly in their favour.

England, led by Thomas Tuchel, have shown flashes of their potential but have also struggled for consistency. Their comeback win over DR Congo highlighted both their resilience and the questions that remain over their defensive stability.

The challenge extends beyond the opposition. Mexico City’s altitude and July heat are expected to test England’s fitness and concentration over 90 minutes.

For England to progress, midfielders Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham must dictate possession and reduce the influence of Mexico’s energetic pressing game. Harry Kane’s experience in front of goal could also prove decisive if chances are limited.

Mexico, however, know another famous victory would spark celebrations across the country and secure a place among the tournament’s final eight.

Prediction: Mexico 2-1 England.

With the group stage behind them, the margins have become razor thin. Every match now carries the weight of elimination, and by the end of the weekend, only eight nations will remain in the chase for football’s greatest prize.
