The Linda Mwananchi movement is heading back to Nairobi on September 13, as its leaders step up their political mobilisation ahead of Kenya’s 2027 general election.

The rally, scheduled for Sunday, will mark the movement’s return to the capital after months of touring counties across the country.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna announced the event on Wednesday, sharing a poster for the rally on X with a short message: “Back to base.”

Linda Mwananchi Takes Campaign Across Counties

The movement has spent much of 2026 taking its political message beyond Nairobi. Its tour has included stops in Busia, Kajiado, Kakamega, Mombasa, Nakuru, Vihiga, Kisumu, Machakos, Thika, Kisii, Taita Taveta, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Homa Bay and Meru.

The group has used the rallies to discuss the economy, governance and issues affecting ordinary Kenyans. Its leaders have also increasingly presented the tour as part of a broader effort to build an opposition platform before the 2027 election.

Linda Mwananchi grew out of disagreements within the Orange Democratic Movement over the party’s cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration. Sifuna and other leaders associated with the movement have argued for a stronger opposition position.

Political Heavyweights Join the Movement

The movement has attracted several prominent politicians, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi.

Their participation has given the movement a broader political profile as Kenya’s political landscape begins to take shape ahead of the 2027 elections.

For its leaders, the rallies are also an opportunity to build support beyond traditional party structures and engage directly with voters.

Homa Bay Violence Raises Fresh Concerns

But the campaign has not been without controversy.

The August rally in Homa Bay was marred by violence. One person died and 46 others were injured, according to a report from Homa-Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital cited by The Eastleigh Voice. Four people suffered gunshot wounds.

The incident has added to concerns about political violence as parties and movements begin positioning themselves for the 2027 contest.

Senator Eddy Oketch warned that violence and organised disruption should not be viewed solely through the lens of one political camp. He said “goonism” was occurring on both sides of the political divide.

For Linda Mwananchi, however, the Nairobi rally offers a chance to return to its home turf after months of county-level mobilisation.

The movement’s leaders are expected to use the gathering to reinforce their political message and rally supporters in the capital as the race towards 2027 begins to take clearer shape.

The September 13 event will also test whether the momentum seen during some of the movement’s county tours can be replicated in Nairobi.

The movement has not yet released a full itinerary for the Nairobi tour, according to reports published after Sifuna’s announcement.
