In a heartwarming tale of compassion, a male eagle in the World Bird Sanctuary located in St. Louis, Missouri, was seen attempting to incubate a rock. Murphy was eventually given a chick to raise fulfilling his desires.
A caretaker at World Bird Sanctuary (WBS) observed a peculiar behavior of Murphy the eagle.
Keeper Kerstin noticed that Murphy was guarding a significant hollow in the ground, which was adorned with few leaves and branches in a meticulous manner. Additionally, a solitary rock was positioned right in the middle of the hollow.
“Every so often he rearranges the sticks in his nest, and cackles at any other eagles that come too close. We wish Murphy all the luck in the world, but we’re not telling him the reality of the situation,” Kerstin his caretaker wrote on Facebook. “We have yet to see a rock hatch!”

While some spectators have speculated that Murphy’s behaviour may be a result of loneliness and a desire for a companion, those who care for him at the sanctuary have asserted that he is intentionally engaging in this behaviour on his own accord.
Initially, the keepers at the sanctuary believed that Murphy’s interest in the rock would fade over time, prompting him to move on from it. However, to their surprise, Murphy remained fully devoted to the rock, and by early April, tensions had escalated in the enclosure he shared with other bald eagles.
Murphy’s intense protection of the “egg” was causing undue stress to the other birds, leading the staff to relocate him to a private enclosure.

After much consideration, the staff made the decision to take a chance and allow Murphy to foster a live chick, despite his lack of experience in raising offspring.
This decision was made with the understanding that it was the chick’s greatest opportunity for survival. As a result, “BabyRock” was relocated, and the new chick was introduced into Murphy’s enclosure.
Murphy exhibited a sense of curiosity towards the eaglet when he approached it after an hour of its introduction into his enclosure, although he did not provide any nourishment. However, the following day, when the eaglet left the nest to move closer to Murphy, a remarkable event occurred.
“IT’S HAPPENING!!!!” WBS said in an update. “MURPHY FED THE BABY!!!!”
Bald eagles are known for their strong parental instincts and are known to be devoted parents, often caring for their young for several months before they are ready to leave the nest.
The story of Murphy and his adopted chick has quickly become a source of inspiration and hope for many, reminding us of the beauty and wonder of the natural world, and the incredible bonds that can be formed between animals.
As for Murphy and his chick, they are expected to continue thriving in their new role as parent and child, with wildlife officials closely monitoring their progress and providing support as needed.
