The letter targets all Artificial Intelligence labs. It came out as a saying that Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools present “profound risks to society and humanity.”.

According to the letter from the nonprofit Future of Life Institute released on Wednesday, A.I. developers are “locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one, not even their creators, can understand, predict or reliably control”.

Other experts who were involved in signing the letter include Steve Wozniak, a co-founder of Apple; Andrew Yang, an entrepreneur and a 2020 presidential candidate; and Rachel Bronson, the president of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

Gary Marcus said, “These things are shaping our world.” He also added, “We have a perfect storm of corporate irresponsibility, widespread adoption, lack of regulation and a huge number of unknowns.”

Artificial Intelligence systems such as ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Bing and Google’s Bard can perform human tasks like human conversations, writing essays on different topics and performing complicated tasks like coding.

The existence of these powerful AI systems has led to competition among tech leaders but it has also been criticized for getting wrong details and spreading false information.

Chat GPT-4, co-founded by Musk was introduced this month by the research lab OpenAI. The suspension would provide time to introduce “shared safety protocols” for AI systems, the letter said. “If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium,” it added.

Development of powerful AI systems should advance “only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable,” the letter said.

“Humanity can enjoy a flourishing future with AI,” the letter said.

“Having succeeded in creating powerful AI systems, we can now enjoy an ‘AI summer’ in which we reap the rewards, engineer these systems for the clear benefit of all and give society a chance to adapt.”

The chief executive of OpenAI, Sam Altman was not in approval of the letter. Marcus and others believe that persuading the wider tech community to agree to the suspension would be a struggle. Also, there is little to no chance of relying on the government to take swift action on the issue because lawmakers have done little to regulate artificial intelligence.

Marcus who signed the letter said that the letter, “shows how many people are deeply worried about what is going on.” He believes the letter will create change. “I think it is a really important moment in the history of AI and maybe humanity,” he said.

He acknowledged that even though it would be difficult to persuade the wider community of companies and researchers on the suspension of AI systems. “The letter is not perfect,” he said. “But the spirit is exactly right.”
