After a church service at AIPCA Dandora on Sunday, November 13, Governor Sakaja addressed the rise of crimes particularly associated with boda-boda operators.
This is in the wake of the spiralling rise in crime rates, especially within the CBD and Nairobi county at large.
He noted that the rise of crime in the county is not good for it as it demeans its dignity and face of the economic hub. Also, he noted that boda-boda operators are business people, who should not all be prosecuted for the crimes of the ones tarnishing the sector’s name.
“Nairobi is an admired and important commercial hub across the globe. We must restore order and dignity since as a county, we care about the safety and security of the 5 million plus residents of Nairobi. We have structures in place including surveillance cameras and the County Askaris working hand in hand with the police to restore the deteriorating security situation,” Governor Sakaja stated.
He further stated, that in a bid to curb the menace all boda-boda operators will have to be in Saccos so as to be regulated. That the government is working on proper registration with details of their specific routes, pick up and drop off points.

“People engaged in the boda-boda sector are not thieves, there could be one or two elements who are tarnishing the name of the sector. Once we have registered all of them, the riders will have reflector jackets that will have their area of operation. When the riders come to town, they will have drop-off points and specific drop-off stages. We have already started the process.”
In his address, he confirmed that footbridges in the city are hotspots for crime to occur. Hence he banned hawkers and street families from operating on footbridges.
He vowed to work for hand in hand with the police noting that he has engaged Inspector General Koome on the same.
The IG Koome in the maiden speech promised to work relentlessly to address the insecurity situation that has Nairobians concerned. He started off with a stern notice on illegal possession of firearms and issued a notice on the same.
“I have issued a 1-month notice to those in possession of illegal firearms to surrender to respective police stations. Our Governor has revealed to us that there are youths who have been reaching out to him expressing their willingness to surrender the illegal weapons. We welcome that,” Koome said without expounding if the grace period is across the 47 counties
In the past weeks, we have had insecurity ordeals across Nairobi county in the headlines.
