For years, this corner of Turkana County was known for little more than scattered manyattas, harsh terrain and long journeys between settlements. Today, the picture is changing.
The discovery and expansion of gold mining activities have sparked an economic surge that is turning once-quiet villages into busy commercial centres. Hotels are rising where open land once stood. Fuel stations, hardware shops, restaurants and retail businesses are opening their doors to serve a growing population of miners, traders and transport operators.
What was once a stopover for travellers is steadily becoming a frontier town driven by the promise of gold.
A New Economy Takes Shape
Residents say the pace of change has been striking. Businesses that would have been difficult to imagine only a few years ago are now part of the local economy, bringing new opportunities for employment and trade.
The mining boom has also attracted investors looking to establish services that support both artisanal miners and larger commercial operations. Local leaders say the influx has boosted demand for accommodation, transport and basic consumer goods.

Communities Seek a Fair Share
County authorities have been encouraging community participation as new investors enter the mining sector. Officials say public consultation is essential to ensure residents benefit from mining while safeguarding the environment and addressing concerns over safety, employment and corporate responsibility.
“We want communities to have a voice in decisions that affect them,” Turkana County Chief Officer for Mining Triza Amoni said during recent public engagement meetings. She said sustainable mining depends on balancing investment with environmental protection and local participation.
Community representatives have welcomed the economic opportunities but insist that mining companies must also invest in health facilities, infrastructure and jobs for local youth. Those concerns have become a recurring theme as more firms express interest in exploring Turkana’s mineral resources.

Opportunity Comes With Challenges
Mining experts note that artisanal and small-scale mining has become an increasingly important source of income across parts of Turkana. The county is also preparing to host the Turkana Gold Summit and Minerals Expo later this year, an event expected to focus on responsible mining, governance and investment.
Yet the rapid growth also brings challenges.
Environmental protection, land rights and equitable sharing of mining benefits remain key issues for communities and policymakers. Experts have repeatedly warned that poorly managed mining booms can strain local resources and widen inequality if regulation fails to keep pace with development.
For many residents, however, the changes are already visible.
Where there were once only traditional homesteads, new businesses line the roads. Lorries carry supplies into the area, while traders and prospectors arrive in search of opportunity.
Whether the gold boom delivers lasting prosperity will depend on how responsibly the sector is managed. For now, one of Kenya’s most remote regions is experiencing a rare moment of economic optimism, powered by a resource buried beneath its soil.
