Media personality Betty Kyallo and comedians Mulamwah, Terence Creative, and MC Jessy are in the country this week on a cultural exchange programme organised by the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi. The delegation will tour Hunan and Fujian provinces until 23 September, according to embassy officials.

The visit is pitched as an opportunity to showcase China’s culture, landscapes, and development projects to Kenyan audiences. The group will be documenting the trip in real time for their followers.

“It’s a chance to share new stories from a part of the world many Kenyans don’t get to see directly,” Ms Kyallo said ahead of her departure. She added that she hopes the journey will broaden perspectives about travel and culture.

Mulamwah, best known for his sharp comic skits, said he was eager to add humour to the experience, while Terence Creative promised to bring “Kenyan storytelling energy” to the tour. MC Jessy, a veteran of Kenya’s stand-up scene, described the trip as “an exciting cultural bridge.”

Hunan, known for its mountainous scenery and as the birthplace of Mao Zedong, and Fujian, a coastal hub for trade and technology, are expected to offer the influencers plenty of material.

This is not the first time Beijing has reached out to Kenyan creatives. In recent years, China has worked closely with African influencers to engage younger audiences in a way that feels more personal than official government exchanges.

Analysts say the move reflects a wider trend: diplomacy increasingly plays out on Instagram feeds and YouTube channels as much as in boardrooms.

For Kenyan fans, the adventure will unfold online over the next week — a cultural exchange not through official communiqués, but through selfies, reels, and skits.
