In a remarkable display of Kenyan dominance, Faith Kipyegon and Dorcas Ewoi secured a 1-2 finish in the women’s 1500m semi-final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, propelling both athletes into the final scheduled for Tuesday.
Kipyegon, the reigning world champion and double world record holder, led the race with a time of 4:00.34. Ewoi, competing in her first major international championship, followed closely, clocking 4:00.65. Their performance not only showcased Kenya’s strength in middle-distance running but also highlighted the emerging talent of Ewoi, who has spent much of her career training in the United States.
Ewoi expressed her gratitude towards Kipyegon, stating, “It felt great… I know she was not running so fast but I was so motivated. She inspired me a lot.” The two embraced at the finish line, celebrating their shared success.
Looking ahead, Kipyegon has expressed confidence in the future of Kenyan middle-distance running, stating, “I believe that one day when I move to the 5000m or the longer distances, that 1500m will be in safer hands as far as Kenya is concerned.” She has identified Ewoi and Nelly Chepchirchir as key athletes poised to continue Kenya’s legacy in the 1500m event.
The final, set to take place on Tuesday, is expected to be a thrilling contest, with Kipyegon aiming for her fourth world title and Ewoi seeking to make a significant impact on her World Championships debut.
