Three suspected robbers on Wednesday, March 8, were killed by a mob at Makongeni in Thika-Kiambu county following a theft incident.
The suspects who were on a motorcycle claimed to have grabbed a handbag from a woman before taking off towards Thika town.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said in a statement that the woman’s screaming caught the attention of the boda-boda operators and made a quick response to the matter.
“The woman’s screams of distress caught boda boda riders and a few other young men who were ‘eating root’ at a nearby ‘nduthi’ shed waiting for a squad, by surprise. This prompted the boda boda riders to give chase after the bike at breakneck speed, as no less than 30 motorbikes flew past the busy highway baying for the trio’s blood,” the DCI said in a clarified statement.
As the suspected robbers advanced towards the Delta petrol station, a matatu which was heading to Sagana, suddenly appeared making the motorbike diverge to avoid a head-on collision. The rider lost control making the three crush on the tarmac.
“What followed was a beating accusing them of soiling their good name by using motorbikes as their gateway means after committing the crime,” the DCI stated.
By the time Police arrived, the three suspects had unfortunately been killed and their bodies were set ablaze.

“Three knives belonging to the robbers, a mobile phone, and personal gargets robbed from the victim were also recovered during the incident,” the DCI said.
The DCI has on the other hand called upon members of the public not to take the law into their hands but to hand over the suspects to the police for justice.
