Three people were killed early on Saturday after a car crashed and caught fire on Mbagathi Way in Nairobi. Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle before it veered off the road.
The car then slammed into a pedestrian footbridge. It burst into flames. The driver and two passengers died at the scene. Their bodies were badly burnt.
Witnesses Described High Speed
Residents who witnessed the crash said the vehicle appeared to be travelling at high speed before the accident. The impact left the car completely destroyed.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene soon afterwards. The victims could not be rescued. Authorities have not yet released their identities.
Investigations Were Launched
The bodies were taken to the Nairobi Funeral Home for identification and post-mortem examinations. The wreckage was removed from the scene and taken away as investigators began examining the cause of the crash.
Police are expected to determine whether speed or other factors contributed to the fatal accident. Road safety remains a major concern in Kenya, with speeding continuing to be one of the leading causes of deadly crashes on the country’s highways and urban roads.
Investigations into Saturday’s accident are ongoing.
