World football governing body FIFA has formally rejected attempts by certain members of the Football Kenya Federation National Executive Committee (NEC) to suspend FKF President Hussein Mohamed, Acting General Secretary and CEO Dennis Gicheru, and another NEC member.
In a letter dated May 25, 2026, addressed to FKF NEC members, FIFA stated that the procedure followed in the attempted suspension failed to comply with the FKF Constitution and therefore could not be recognized.
The letter, copied to Confederation of African Football (CAF), emphasized that the process lacked the procedural safeguards required under Article 41 of the 2017 FKF Constitution.
FIFA made its position clear from the outset, stating that the NEC members behind the move had failed to provide evidence showing that constitutional procedures were followed.
“We must emphasise that the specific requests made in FIFA’s previous correspondence aimed at clarifying whether the measures in question were adopted in compliance with the FKF Constitution, have not been duly complied with,” the letter read.
“FIFA therefore categorically rejects the procedure that has been followed in this matter.”
According to FIFA, any attempt to compel an official to “step aside” amounts to a provisional suspension and must strictly comply with Article 41 of the FKF Constitution.
Article 41 at the Center of the Dispute
FIFA explained that Article 41 clearly outlines the process required for the provisional dismissal or suspension of FKF officials.
The governing body noted that any such motion must be formally proposed, justified, placed on the NEC agenda, communicated to all members, and passed through the required quorum and voting procedures. Additionally, the affected officials must be granted the right to be heard before any decision is made.
“Any measure requiring an official to ‘step aside’, when imposed as a mandatory act rather than undertaken voluntarily, can only be understood as a form of provisional suspension,” FIFA wrote.
“As such, it must strictly comply with the substantive and procedural safeguards expressly stipulated therein.”
FIFA stressed that these safeguards are “fundamental guarantees of due process, legality and institutional integrity.”
FIFA Warns Against Institutional Instability
The world football governing body also warned FKF members against actions that could destabilize Kenyan football administration.
FIFA referenced FKF’s past governance challenges and cautioned NEC members to act responsibly and within the federation’s constitutional framework.
“We would like to recall that the FKF has experienced periods of institutional instability in the past,” the letter stated.
“It is essential that all FKF Members and members of FKF bodies act with restraint, responsibility and strict respect for the FKF Constitution in order to safeguard the stability, credibility and proper functioning of the federation.”
The organization warned that individuals who violate FKF rules and regulations could face disciplinary action through the federation’s judicial bodies.
