Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna brought parts of the capital to a standstill on Sunday as thousands of supporters gathered at Jacaranda Grounds for a rally organised by his Linda Mwananchi movement.
The convoy made its way along Jogoo Road, with Sifuna and his allies waving to residents who lined the route. Supporters, some carrying Kenyan flags, had been gathering at the venue since morning.
A Day of Prayer and Politics
The day began at All Saints Cathedral, where Sifuna and his team attended a church service at 9am. From there, the group toured some of Nairobi’s busiest markets, including Marikiti, Gikomba and Burma Market.
The procession then moved through Stage 17, B Centre and Manyanja before heading down Jogoo Road towards Jacaranda Grounds.
Sifuna framed the day as both a spiritual and political undertaking. In a message posted on social media, he urged supporters to turn out in large numbers.
“The Sunday programme is very short,” he said. “First, prayers so that God can add more enemies and confusion to those with bad intentions. Then we enter the field at Jacaranda. What is your excuse?”
Heavy Security as Businesses Close
Police maintained a visible presence across parts of the city centre ahead of the rally. Some businesses in the CBD shut their doors as a precaution.
The heightened security reflects concerns about possible disruptions during the procession. Officers were deployed to keep order as crowds made their way through the city.
Sifuna was joined by several political figures, including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo and former nominated senator Millicent Omanga.
Outside the cathedral, large crowds gathered early, waiting for the service to end before joining the convoy.
A Show of Strength Ahead of 2027
The Nairobi mobilisation is seen as an effort by Sifuna to expand Linda Mwananchi’s reach beyond its current support base. His allies have described the event as the “mother of all rallies” for the senator.
The rally comes at a time of intense political activity, with rival opposition groups jostling for position ahead of the 2027 General Election. Sifuna has been positioning himself as a significant player in the opposition realignment.
The event is being closely watched as a test of whether the movement can command a substantial following in the capital.
