President William Ruto has joined the Moi family and Kenya’s medical community in mourning Dr David Silverstein, the physician who cared for retired President Daniel arap Moi for more than four decades.

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi announced Silverstein’s death on Sunday, prompting tributes to a doctor remembered for his long service and close relationship with the former president.

In his condolence message, President Ruto described Silverstein as a distinguished doctor whose work left a lasting mark on Kenya’s medical profession.

Presiden Ruto said Silverstein made important contributions to medicine, particularly in cardiology, while caring for patients throughout his career.

“Dr Silverstein leaves behind a distinguished legacy of service to our nation,” the President said.

He offered his condolences to Silverstein’s family, friends and colleagues, saying his loved ones could draw strength from the contribution he made during his lifetime.

Silverstein was closely associated with Moi’s medical care. He first treated Moi in 1977, when Moi was serving as Vice President, and continued as his personal physician until Moi died in February 2020.

Their professional relationship grew into a close friendship over the years. Silverstein later spoke of the bond they developed beyond the traditional doctor-patient relationship.

Gideon Moi also paid tribute to the physician, recalling the care and attention he gave to his father.

He described Silverstein as a dedicated doctor who treated his patients with empathy and close attention to detail.

“Dr Silverstein left a lasting impression on those he treated, and we witnessed firsthand his attention to detail and empathy,” Gideon said.

He said the doctor regarded his responsibility to Moi as more than a professional duty.

“To him, Mzee Moi was not merely a client. He was a human being whose health, dignity and well being mattered deeply to him,” Gideon said.

Silverstein’s death brings to an end a long chapter in Kenya’s medical and political history, marked by his four-decade association with one of the country’s longest-serving presidents.

His family and colleagues are expected to announce further details about his funeral arrangements.
