On Wednesday, Elon Musk supported a tweet accusing Jews of hating white people. He wrote, “the actual truth” under the tweet, causing an uproar. The White House condemned his words Friday morning, terming them “abhorrent.” Moreover, an independent watchdog named “Media Matters” added gasoline to this fire.

Media Matters called to attention big international companies whose ads ran alongside antisemitic tweets. These ads were also alongside tweets praising Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. Consequently, international companies IBM and Apple announced their move to pause all ads on X. Additionally, more than 150 rabis urged Disney, Amazon, and Oracle to suspend their ads on X as well.

As a result, X lost advertisers; Apple, IBM, Warner Bros, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Disney, Comcast, Lionsgate, and NBC Universal. Disney further announced that it would also pause spending time on the app. Apple had been X’s biggest advertiser, with an approximate yearly budget of Ksh 15 billion ($ 100 million).

Elon Musk has been riddled with losing advertisers, regulators, employees, and even users ever since he purchased X in November 2022. In December 2022, X risked losing Apple as an advertiser after Musk publicly attacked it. Apple had decreased its ads on the app and Elon tweeted a meme about “going to war” with it. He also asked in a tweet whether Apple CEO, Tim Cook and his employees “hate free speech in America.”

Nevertheless, researchers have noted an alarming rise of antisemitic and racial posts on X. This has been attributed to the aftermath of Elon’s tweet. However, X CEO, Linda Yaccarino made a tweet that attempted to come to the company’s rescue on Thursday. She wrote, “X’s point of view has always been very clear that discrimination by everyone should STOP across the board.” Nonetheless, Musk called the Media Matters company “an evil organization” and is looking to sue it.
