The victory made La Roja the first team to hold the under-17, under-20 and senior world titles at the same time.

Playing in their second blue kit, England got an early chance in the fifth minute itself, but Lauren Hemp missed.

The Spanish took the lead with a great strike from Captain Olga Carmona at the 29 minute who drove into the England penalty area and hit a hard and low shot into the bottom left corner.

Despite all efforts from the English side, including missing a last-second header, they failed to level the score and as a result, fell behind in the race.

“We’ve suffered a lot throughout the past 12 months but I think everything has a reason to be. This has made us a stronger team,” said Carmona.

“And it’s really incredible. I don’t know just why Spain is the world champions, but I think that we deserved it,” she added.
