The mining sector in South Africa are using renewable energy and technological innovation to counter challenges such as rising electricity cost and supply limitations.
Amid the pressures of rising expenses and delayed long-term investments, the industry is grabbing the opportunity to revolutionize its practices and carve a greener path forward. The urgency to combat carbon emissions and reduce energy dependency on fossil fuels has stimulated efforts to adopt renewable energy solutions, most notably solar power.
“Our move towards renewable energy is two-fold—firstly, to curtail our carbon footprint and reliance on carbon-based energy sources. Secondly, it’s driven by financial considerations as energy prices have soared nearly tenfold since 2007.”
A spokesperson from the industry outlined
Mining behemoth Anglo-American is at the forefront of this transformation, with ambitious plans to introduce nine gigawatts of renewable energy supply. Distributed strategically across South Africa to align with operational locations, the company is complementing solar energy production with wheeled energy, harnessing power from off-site locations and channeling it to their facilities.
Serty Resources, operating within the heart of the coal mining sector, is pioneering sustainable initiatives that ripple through the energy landscape. Their pioneering approach involves not only sourcing renewable energy for their own operations but also generating surplus energy that can be sold to other customers, amplifying the overall green impact. This virtuous cycle not only ensures self-sufficiency but also bolsters the national grid’s capacity.

In a significant stride towards renewable energy adoption, the construction of Langa province’s largest wind farm, poised to become South Africa’s largest, is underway. With a projected capacity of 900 megawatts, a substantial portion of the energy generated will be channeled into the grid, enhancing the nation’s renewable energy capacity.
The transition towards greener energy sources isn’t solely driven by environmental concerns. In an industry where reliable and affordable electricity is paramount for safe operations and worker well-being, the integration of sustainable energy forms an indispensable foundation for longevity and progress.
