The president’s “noble gesture” resulted in the release of a total of 4,270 inmates, as confirmed by the country’s correctional service.

The amnesty encompassed different categories of prisoners, such as individuals suffering from terminal illnesses and those who had served a significant portion of their sentences, specifically three-quarters for most prisoners and one-tenth for those above the age of 60.

Notably, individuals convicted of violent crimes, robbery, treason, and public order and security offenses were excluded from the amnesty.

The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service issued an appeal to the general public, urging them to accept and support the reintegration of the released inmates.

The former prisoners will have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming presidential and legislative elections scheduled for August, pending the announcement of a specific date.
