These operators argue that the additional costs to passengers is necessary to avoid enduring substantial financial losses. Fuel prices play an important role in the PSV sector, as they directly influence the final fares paid by the passengers.

With the recent increase in fuel prices, PSV operators find themselves with no other alternative but to transfer the burden to their customers. One anonymous leading bus operator in the country revealed that the management is currently evaluating whether price adjustments are necessary to mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs.

This decision is prompted by the need to sustain the operations of PSV while still ensuring affordability for commuters. The timing of this potential fare increase coincides with a period when many Kenyans are already dealing with the high cost of food and other basic necessities.

On Monday, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced price hikes for super petrol, diesel, and kerosene in Nairobi. The new prices reflect an increase of Ksh.3.40, Ksh.6.40, and Ksh.15.19 per litre, respectively. Motorists in the city will now have to pay approximately Ksh.182.7 for petrol, Ksh.168.4 for diesel, and Ksh.161.13 for kerosene.

The rising fuel costs will impact the overall cost of living for Kenyans, extending beyond the transportation sector. Other elements of production that heavily rely on fuel will also be impacted.

Industries such as manufacturing and agriculture, which utilize fuel for machinery and transportation, will face increased operational expenses leading to higher costs of goods and services.

Commuters should prepare for potential fare increases in the PSV sector as operators seek to counterbalance their rising fuel expenses. Passengers may need to reevaluate their budgets and explore alternative transportation options to navigate the potentially higher costs.
