The Prime Cabinet Secretary appears to be on a path to becoming Ruto’s ambassador at large as assigned by the President. He has managed to travel abroad to many places representing Ruto in conferences and summits.
Mudavadi is set to lead a team of delegates from Kenya on a trip to Nigeria. They are to attend the swearing-in of Nigeria’s new president, Bola Tinubu at the Eagle Square in Abuja.
“The Prime Cabinet Secretary, H.E Musalia Mudavadi will leave the country today, Sunday, May 28 2023 for Abuja, Nigeria. He will represent Kenya’s president at the inauguration ceremony in Nigeria on Monday 29th,” read the statement from Mudavadi’s Director of Press Salim Swaleh.
Mudavadi is the Prime Cabinet Secretary whose roles include, assisting the President and his Deputy in coordination and supervision of the government ministries and state agencies. Moreover, alongside the minister of Interior and National Administration oversee the implementation, technical monitoring and evaluation of policies, programs and projects from the National Government. Another responsibility is to lead and coordinate the national government’s legislative agenda across all ministries and state departments together with party and coalition leaders. He is also expected to chair the Principal Secretaries’ committees. Above all, he is expected to fulfil the duties assigned to him by the President.
Management of foreign affairs and policy is the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora. This role is currently being filled by Dr Alfred Mutua. The President, however, seems to trust Mudavadi more with the role as he is the one being sent to represent Ruto in summits he cannot make it to.
Journey to Becoming Ruto’s Ambassador
Last year, Mudavadi was part of Ruto’s delegation to the United States African Leaders Summit held in the US. December last year, Mudavadi represented Ruto at the CommonWealth Trade and Investment in London, United Kingdom. He also held talks with Lord Marland of Odstock, chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council.
In March, he was able to travel to Azerbaijan representing the President at the Non-Aligned Movement Summit. He represented Ruto in the swearing-in ceremony of Brazilian President, Lula da Silva. Alongside all these, Mudavadi also managed to represent Ruto in Burundi at a regional conference on the Democratic Republic of Congo peace initiative.
All these meetings are a fulfilment of a promise Ruto made to Kenyans to strengthen its foreign relations. He said at the UN General Assembly in September that Kenya would continue to be ”an anchor state in the region” and invest ”in diplomatic efforts to find lasting peace in myriad situations within and beyond the region”.
