Manchester City produced a resounding 4-0 thrashing of 14-time winners Real Madrid to progress to the Champions League final.

The 2022/23 Champions League final will take place on June 10, 2023, at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, which was the venue for Liverpool’s famous comeback victory over AC Milan in 2005.

Pep Guardiola and Jack Grealish’s reaction

The fantastic form has seen City go 23 games unbeaten, winning their last 15 at the Etihad Stadium, which was far too good for Real Madrid.

Jack Grealish said:

“I don’t think many teams can do that to Real Madrid but when we’re all together and playing, especially at home, we feel unstoppable”

“I saw a stat the other day about how many Champions League games we’ve won at home compared to away, I couldn’t believe it. When we play here in front of our fans, we feel unstoppable. Even in the league, we feel nobody can beat us. You see what we’ve done to Bayern Munich, Leipzig and tonight, it’s unbelievable.”

Pep Guardiola When asked about Grealish’s “unstoppable” quote said:

“I don’t like that, no. Every team is stoppable if you do what you have to do. It’s nice the players feel that, but football can change from one game to another. You have to stay calm. I would like to give the players two days off, but I cannot give them one because the Premier League is there.

Pep Guardiola is football’s great perfectionist

Pep Guardiola is appearing to be one of the greatest managers in that greatness can be officially conferred on both team and manager if they successfully emulate the perfect Treble won by Manchester United in 1999 – winning the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.

As it stands Pep Guardiola is in the process of winning the Treble as the will face Chelsea weekend to close in the Premier League, face Manchester United in a Manchester derby for the FA Cup finals and now they are set for Istanbul, the 2022/23 Champions League final will take place on June 10, 2023, at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium.

“These guys have done these types of things for many years and today they got their reward. We have time to prepare for the final but now we have to prepare for Chelsea because we have to close it [the Premier League] as soon as possible to prepare for United [in the FA Cup final] and Inter Milan.”

If you wanted to find fault within City’s spectacular 4-0 thrashing of Real Madrid, that might just have been the extent of it. This was very, very special.

Guardiola said: “This is one of the highest [results of my career], considering the opponent, Real Madrid, in the semi-final of the Champions League. We had to perform well, and we did it, especially in the first half. It was really, really good.

Beating Real Madrid. It just feels different. Especially for Manchester City after the trauma of their dramatic semi-final defeat last season. Pep Guardiola even referenced it in his press conference afterwards, suggesting the pain was still with them.

If anyone had any doubts about the greatness of the side Guardiola has assembled, they might have been erased by an other-worldly display, especially in a first half during which Real was pretty much reduced to the level of a lower league side clinging on in a cup tie.

Should we be surprised? Twenty-three games unbeaten is one thing, but in front of their own supporters, it is 15 wins in a row. This season they have won 6-3 against Manchester United, 4-1 against Arsenal and Liverpool, 3-0 against Bayern Munich.

That was Kyle Walker:

“If I can’t compete with these top players, I shouldn’t be here. I need to make sure I come against the best and can deal with the best.”
