Nairobi County has given families and members of the public seven days to identify and collect 59 unclaimed bodies held at Mama Lucy Kibaki Funeral Home.

The notice, issued by the county’s Department of Health, Wellness and Nutrition, says the bodies have remained at the facility since their dates of admission.

The bodies were admitted between April 2025 and February 2026. Most are adult men, although the list also includes women and several people whose identities have not been established.

The county has asked relatives, friends and other members of the public to check the list and contact the funeral home if they believe they may know any of the deceased.

The notice cites the Public Health Act and the Public Health (Public Health Mortuaries) Rules, 1991. It warns that if the bodies are not identified and collected within seven days, the county will seek authority to dispose of them.

“The following 59 (fifty nine) unclaimed bodies are lying at MAMA LUCY KIBAKI FUNERAL HOME from the date of admission, awaiting collection,” the county said in the notice.

The list gives details including names, ages, genders, admission numbers and the locations or facilities from which the bodies were brought.

Some entries are identified only as “Unknown African Man” or similar descriptions, while others carry names.

The notice comes shortly after the county issued a separate notice concerning 473 unclaimed bodies at Nairobi Funeral Home, formerly known as Nairobi City Mortuary.

That notice, dated August 11, also gave the public seven days to identify and collect the remains before the county sought authority for their disposal.

The issue extends beyond Nairobi’s county facilities. In March, Kenyatta National Hospital issued a notice concerning 480 unclaimed bodies at its Farewell Home.

KNH said the remains included 102 adults and 378 children and warned that it would seek court authority to dispose of them if they were not identified and collected within seven days.

The notices point to a wider challenge facing public mortuaries, where some remains stay for months when relatives cannot be traced or identities have not been established.
