Gor Mahia and Tusker will meet at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday with more than a trophy at stake. The 3 p.m. FKF Super Cup match brings together the 2025-26 league champions and the Mozzart Bet Cup winners in an early test of their ambitions for the new season.
For Gor Mahia, the match comes after a demanding run in the CECAFA Kagame Cup. The Kenyan champions reached the final before losing 2-1 to Rwanda’s Rayon Sports in extra time.
Coach Charles Akonnor believes that campaign has given his players valuable preparation.
“I am very delighted that the CECAFA Kagame Cup comes at such a time because it will give the team good preparations ahead of the new season,” Akonnor said.
The tournament also gave him a chance to assess new players, test different combinations and identify areas that need attention.
Gor continued their preparations last weekend with a 2-2 draw against newly promoted Migori Youth before winning on penalties. But injuries have complicated Akonnor’s plans.
Captain Sylvester Owino is dealing with a calf injury, while Samuel Kapen faces a lengthy absence after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Felix Oluoch and Patrick Essombe are also recovering.
Those absences could put greater responsibility on Frank Odhiambo and vice-captain Michael Kibwage in defence.
The match will also bring an immediate reunion with Siraj Mohammed. The Harambee Stars defender recently left Gor after returning from a loan spell at KCB and joined Tusker.
Akonnor said he had no resentment towards the player.
“When he felt he wanted to leave, I couldn’t stand in his way. I want to clarify that I don’t have any issue with any player and I don’t intend to do so,” he said.
Tusker arrive with a team that has undergone considerable change under French coach Julien Mette.
The Brewers have brought in Siraj, striker Eric Kapaito, winger Yakeen Muteheli, right-back Eugene Ikutwa and midfielder Chrispinus Otieno. Nine players have left as Mette seeks to build a deeper squad for domestic and continental competition.
“We need to build a stronger and deeper squad if we want to compete with Africa’s top clubs,” Mette said.
Tusker’s preparations have been less successful on the scoreboard. They were eliminated from the Kagame Cup in the group stage without a win.
Mette, however, said the tournament still served its purpose.
“I urge patience following our early exit because the tournament has fulfilled its primary objective of preparing the team,” he said.
Sunday’s match will offer a clearer indication of how far that rebuilding process has gone.
For Gor, there is also the looming challenge of the CAF Champions League, where they are due to face Egyptian side Pyramids FC in September. Tusker, meanwhile, are preparing for their own CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
Akonnor has urged his players not to be intimidated by the reputation of their continental opponents.
“Everything is possible,” he said.
The Super Cup therefore arrives as both a trophy contest and a final examination. The 2026-27 Premier League season is scheduled to begin on August 29, leaving both clubs little time to settle their squads and sharpen their plans.
Mette said the value of matches such as Sunday’s goes beyond the result.
“We want to use these big matches to understand where we are and what we still need to improve,” he said.
At Nyayo, the first silverware of the season will be decided. But for two clubs with continental ambitions, the bigger prize may be a clearer sense of what lies ahead.
