At State House in Nairobi, celebrations met ambition. President William Ruto welcomed Gor Mahia after their SportPesa League triumph, marking a record-extending 22nd domestic title and setting the tone for their continental challenge.
The champions were hosted alongside senior government officials, club leaders, coaches and players. The occasion doubled as both recognition of success and a reminder of the gaps still facing Kenyan football.
“Congratulations Gor Mahia Football Club on winning the 2025/26 SportPesa League title,” he said. “This achievement reflects discipline, hard work and resilience.”

He praised the club’s long-standing influence in Kenyan sport, saying its legacy continues to shape young players across the country.
“For generations, Gor Mahia has occupied a special place in the hearts of football fans,” he said. “The club continues to inspire young Kenyans to pursue their dreams.”
President Ruto also called for deeper investment in local football, urging private sponsors to step in more boldly to support clubs and youth development. He promised government backing as Gor Mahia prepares for the CAF Champions League.
As the mood softened, players turned the formal gathering into a lighter moment. Captain Philemon Otieno thanked the President for the recognition and promised strong representation on the continental stage.
“We promise to give our best and represent Kenya with pride,” he said.
Then came a cheeky appeal from the squad, delivered in Sheng. “Rais, team imenituma uweke mawe,” Otieno said, drawing laughter in the room as he hinted at a bonus request.
President Ruto responded with humor before announcing a financial reward for the team. He pledged Sh10 million for the champions, in addition to an immediate Sh100,000 each for players present.
Club chairman Ambrose Rachier welcomed the recognition but used the moment to highlight structural challenges, particularly the lack of a permanent training facility.
“One of our biggest challenges remains access to quality and permanent training facilities,” he said, urging long-term investment to match the club’s stature.
Government officials, including Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi and Sports CS Salim Mvurya, were acknowledged for facilitating the engagement.
As the event closed, Gor Mahia presented their league trophy and a signed jersey to the President, before turning their focus to the tougher assignment ahead in African competition.
