Harambee Starlets have little room for error at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a bruising 4-0 defeat to hosts Morocco, leaving Kenya needing a positive result against Senegal to keep their knockout hopes alive.
The loss in Rabat on Sunday placed coach Beldine Odemba’s side under immediate pressure in Group A. Kenya will now head into Thursday’s meeting with Senegal knowing defeat could all but end their campaign before their final group fixture against Algeria on August 3.
Bright start undone by Morocco’s clinical finishing
Yet the scoreline only told part of the story.
Kenya made an energetic start and nearly stunned the hosts inside five minutes. Tereza “Terry” Engesha came within inches of opening the scoring when her powerful effort crashed against the crossbar. Moments later, Valerie Nekesa carved out another promising opportunity, but Eglay Mukhwana could not apply the finishing touch.
Those missed chances proved costly.
Morocco gradually took control and punished Kenya’s defensive lapses with clinical finishing. Meriem Atiq opened the scoring in the 19th minute before Sakina Ouzraoui doubled the advantage less than 10 minutes later. Ibtissam Jraidi added a third before half-time and completed her brace shortly after the restart to seal an emphatic victory for the tournament hosts.
Odemba’s changes fail to spark comeback
Seeking a way back into the contest, Odemba reshuffled her side after the interval, introducing Mercy Airo, Shirlene Opisa, Euphrasier Shilwatso and Airin Madalina.
The changes injected greater urgency into Kenya’s play, but Morocco, guided by coach Jorge Vilda, remained organised and denied the Starlets clear scoring opportunities as they comfortably saw out the match.
The result lifted Morocco to the top of Group A on goal difference, ahead of Algeria, who opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Senegal.
Senegal showdown offers Starlets a lifeline
For Kenya, the challenge is now clear.
Odemba assembled a squad that blends experienced internationals with emerging talent, including several players who featured at the 2024 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup. That youthful energy was evident in the opening stages against Morocco, even if the team ultimately struggled to match the hosts over 90 minutes.
The Starlets will hope to build on those encouraging moments when they face Senegal in a fixture that now carries enormous significance.
A victory would revive Kenya’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals and keep qualification firmly within their own hands. Another defeat, however, would leave the Starlets relying on favorable results elsewhere before their final group match against Algeria.
