Senior leaders from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Kenya Red Cross Society have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening humanitarian cooperation with the Government of Kenya following a courtesy call on President William Ruto at State House.
The delegation was led by IFRC Secretary General Jagan Chapagain and included Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Dr. Ahmed Idris, Vice President of the Djibouti Red Crescent Mahdi Mohammed, and other senior officials from the IFRC and the Kenya Red Cross Society. The meeting came after the official visit to Kenya by His Majesty King Letsie III of Lesotho, who serves as the IFRC Zero Hunger Champion and African Union Champion for Nutrition.
During the meeting, the leaders discussed the critical role of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in supporting humanitarian action in Kenya and globally. The discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between governments and humanitarian organisations to improve emergency preparedness and response, enhance community resilience, and address emerging humanitarian challenges, including food insecurity, climate change, disease outbreaks and disaster risks.
The engagement also highlighted the importance of locally led humanitarian action, with Kenya Red Cross playing a central role in disaster response, first aid services, health interventions, climate adaptation programmes and emergency relief across the country. The IFRC, the world’s largest humanitarian network with 191 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, continues to advocate for stronger partnerships that enable communities to prepare for and recover from crises more effectively.
The courtesy call followed King Letsie III’s visit to Kenya, which is aimed at advancing the Zero Hunger agenda in Africa through climate-smart agriculture, food security initiatives and stronger collaboration between governments, humanitarian organisations and development partners. During his visit, the King is expected to participate in field visits showcasing community-led food security solutions and resilience-building programmes supported by the Kenya Red Cross and the IFRC.
Kenya Red Cross reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Government of Kenya, the IFRC and Movement partners to deliver impactful humanitarian programmes that improve the lives of vulnerable communities while strengthening the country’s capacity to respond to future humanitarian emergencies.
