Twelve Kenyan students are preparing to take on some of the world’s brightest young tech minds after earning places at the Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals in Shenzhen, China.

The competition, set for next week, will bring together thousands of students from around the world in what has become one of the largest international contests focused on information and communication technology.

For the Kenyan team, the journey marks more than a trip abroad. It is a moment many hope will underline the country’s growing place in the global technology space.

The students were officially flagged off on Tuesday during a ceremony attended by senior government officials, university representatives and executives from Huawei Kenya.

Speaking at the event, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi praised the students for earning their place through hard work and determination.

“You are not there because of luck, but because of talent,” he told them.

Mudavadi said Kenya’s future economic growth would increasingly depend on investment in science, technology and innovation. He added that cooperation between government institutions and private companies would play a major role in preparing young people for a changing job market.

The students were selected through the Huawei ICT Academy Programme, which partners with universities across Kenya to provide digital skills training and industry exposure.

They will now compete against top-performing students from dozens of countries in categories designed to test technical knowledge, innovation and problem-solving abilities.

Also present during the ceremony was Huawei Kenya executive Gavin Gao, who reaffirmed the company’s support for digital learning and technology development in Kenya.

University leaders used the occasion to challenge the students to think beyond employment and focus on creating opportunities for others.

Professor Robert Kinyua, Deputy Vice Chancellor at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, urged the students to use technology and entrepreneurship to help address unemployment among young people.

“Students must be ambitious by creating jobs for people in the future and helping narrow the job gap in Kenya,” he said.

Over the past few years, Kenya has increasingly positioned itself as one of Africa’s leading technology hubs, driven by a growing digital economy, expanding internet access and a rising number of young innovators entering the sector.

Competitions such as the Huawei ICT Challenge have become important platforms for exposing students to international standards while giving them opportunities to exchange ideas with peers from across the globe.

For the 12 students heading to Shenzhen, the challenge ahead will be intense. But for many back home, their presence alone signals how far Kenya’s technology ambitions have come.
