The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued sweeping disciplinary sanctions following chaotic scenes that marred the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 final between Senegal and hosts Morocco.
In a statement released after deliberations by its Disciplinary Board, CAF confirmed that both the Federation of Senegalese Football (FSF) and the Federation Royale of Moroccan Football (FRMF), alongside several players and officials, were found guilty of breaching the CAF Disciplinary Code during and after the final.
Senegal Coach Pape Thiaw Hit With Match Ban and $100,000 Fine
The most severe individual punishment was handed to Senegal head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw, who has been suspended for five official CAF matches.
CAF cited unsporting conduct, violation of fair play and integrity principles, and actions that brought the game into disrepute. Thiaw was also fined USD 100,000.
Senegal players Iliman Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were each suspended for two official CAF matches for unsporting behaviour towards the referee.
FSF Fined Over $600,000 for Supporter and Team Misconduct
CAF also imposed significant financial penalties on the FSF.
The Senegal federation was fined USD 300,000 for the improper conduct of its supporters and an additional USD 300,000 for the unsporting conduct of players and technical staff, including actions that brought the game into disrepute.
A further USD 15,000 fine was issued after five Senegal players received cautions during the match.
Morocco Players Sanctioned, FRMF Also Fined
On the Moroccan side, star defender Achraf Hakimi was suspended for two official CAF matches, with one match suspended for a year, following unsporting behaviour.
Midfielder Ismael Saibari received a three-match suspension and a USD 100,000 fine.
The FRMF was fined USD 200,000 for inappropriate behaviour by ball boys during the final, while an additional USD 100,000 penalty was imposed after Moroccan players and technical staff invaded the VAR review area and obstructed the referee’s work.
CAF also fined the federation USD 15,000 for the use of lasers by supporters inside the stadium.
