President Ruto Defends Criticism of Judiciary While Reaffirming Respect for Court Decisions

President William Ruto

President William Ruto on Wednesday defended his administration’s public criticism of certain judicial decisions, insisting that raising concerns about court rulings is part of his constitutional duty and not an attack on the Judiciary.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed Court of Appeal judges, the President said his remarks on judicial decisions were motivated by the need to protect public interest and safeguard critical government policy priorities.

“It Is Out of Duty” – Ruto

Ruto noted that he has, on several occasions, questioned court rulings that appear to hinder the implementation of key public policies, arguing that such scrutiny is necessary given the real-life consequences of judicial decisions.

“I have questioned judicial decisions that appear to indeed impede the implementation of critical public policy priorities,” Ruto said.

He added that some rulings, in his view, seemed to cross into the realm of judicial overreach, and in extreme cases, what he described as judicial tyranny.

“It is out of duty to speak honestly and candidly about the consequences such decisions have on the lives and livelihoods of our people,” he stated.

Ruto Raffirms Respect for the Rule of Law

Despite expressing strong reservations about certain rulings, the President emphasized that his administration has consistently respected the authority of the courts.

Ruto underscored that the government has opted for lawful mechanisms to challenge unfavorable judgments rather than ignoring or defying court orders.

“Notwithstanding these differences of opinion, this administration has consistently respected court decisions where we have been the certified parties,” he said.

He added that where disagreements arise, the government has chosen the lawful path of appeal where available, reaffirming its commitment to constitutionalism and the rule of law.

The President’s remarks come amid ongoing public debate over the balance between judicial independence.

Ruto reiterated that constructive engagement between the Executive and the Judiciary is essential for democratic stability, while maintaining respect for institutional boundaries.
