Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has challenged President William Ruto to stop invoking retired President Uhuru Kenyatta in political attacks and instead prepare to face him in the 2027 election.
Speaking in Naivasha, Nakuru County, today Friday, Gachagua said Kenyatta was no longer seeking the presidency and should not be treated as Ruto’s political opponent.
“Wachana na Rais Uhuru Kenyatta. Hashindani na wewe. Uhuru hatakuwa kwa debe,” Gachagua said. “Wewe kubali mpinzani wako, mguu ni Rigathi Gachagua.”
His comments came a day after Ruto criticised his predecessor during a public address in Eldoret. The President accused Kenyatta of backing political figures opposed to his administration and questioned the record of the former government on affordable housing, healthcare and education.
President Ruto also challenged his political opponents to present their record and agenda to voters ahead of the 2027 election.
Gachagua, however, turned the criticism back on the current administration. He defended Kenyatta’s record and argued that the government should be judged on the issues facing Kenyans today, including the cost of living and household finances.
“Uhuru alikuachia watu wakiwa na pesa mifukoni, lakini sasa hawana chochote,” he said.
He also rejected suggestions that Kenyatta was the force behind political figures challenging Ruto, arguing that the former president had already served his two terms.
“Where does Uhuru come in this competition? He has served for 10 years, and he won’t be elected again,” Gachagua said.
The exchange adds another layer to an increasingly political debate ahead of the 2027 election. Ruto has continued to defend the record of his administration, including its affordable housing and healthcare programmes. Government statements say millions of Kenyans have registered with the Social Health Authority and describe the housing programme as a major source of jobs and affordable homes.
Gachagua, meanwhile, has sought to position himself as a direct challenger to Ruto. The former deputy president is leading the Democracy for the Citizens Party, which opened a new office in Naivasha on Friday as the party expands its political presence.
The latest exchange underscores the growing focus on the next presidential contest, with both sides increasingly turning their attention to the records, alliances and political loyalties that could shape the 2027 race.
