NAIROBI — A man is in police custody after officers seized a massive haul of illegal drugs and alcohol along Nairobi’s busy Jogoo Road on Monday.
The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was found in possession of 200 kilograms of cannabis (bhang) and 100 litres of chang’aa, a traditional but illegal home-brewed spirit. The operation was carried out by the Nairobi Regional Operations Team on the evening of July 21.
Authorities say the seizure is part of an ongoing campaign to root out narcotics and illicit brews in the capital.
“The National Police Service reaffirms its commitment to combating illicit drugs and brews, as well as protecting communities through sustained enforcement and proactive policing,” read a statement issued after the arrest.
Police said the suspect was taken into custody on the spot and is being held as investigations continue. He is expected to be charged in court once the process is complete.
The operation follows a string of recent crackdowns across the country, including the destruction of over 600 litres of illegal brew in Kisumu and the arrest of five suspects in Ikutha for similar offences.
Jogoo Road a major artery in Nairobi’s Eastlands area has in recent years been flagged as a transit route for various illegal goods, including drugs and counterfeit products. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about rising criminal activity and the growing presence of illicit trade.
Police have called on the public to report suspicious activity and provide information that may help disrupt the networks behind drug and alcohol trafficking.
“This is not a one-off,” said a senior officer involved in the raid. “More operations are coming. Anyone found dealing in or possessing these substances will face the full force of the law.”
As investigations continue, authorities have confirmed that all recovered items have been documented and secured as evidence.
