The family of Susan Kamengere Njoki, better known as the founder and CEO of Toto Touch Kenya, is now demanding justice following her sudden death on 15 July. They claim she was forcibly taken from her home, injected with unknown substances and later died in hospital under unclear circumstances.

A frenzied evening

On 14 July, Susan’s voice trembled over a distressing phone call as she described the events unfolding at her home in Kileleshwa, Nairobi. “They stormed in… two men held me while two nurses injected me,” she said, referring to the unidentified strangers. When she asked where they were taking her, the men responded only with evasions.

According to family members, Susan had long lived with a mental health condition but was stable and on medication. She had recently expressed excitement over securing an international interview. “Do you think they can schedule an interview with a mad woman?” she asked, according to audio recordings.

Family speaks out

Susan’s sister told TUKO she received Susan’s voice note just before the incident. “She said the people claimed they had been sent by Dr Onyancha and that she needed an injection and to be taken to hospital,” she said.

At the hospital, the family claims she was administered further injections without explanation. They allege Susan’s husband, Allois Ngure, authorised the admission and blocked the family from visiting. “The guards refused and asked us to seek consent from Allois. When I called him, he did not answer.”

The deleted post

Hours before her death, Susan posted a message on Facebook recounting how she had been restrained and medicated without her consent and forced to delete the post. “Every patient has a right… Calling for justice for the sick to be allowed space to express themselves,” she wrote, according to screenshots shared by friends.

Her friend, radio presenter Muthoni, added:

“They will never have peace! RIP my friend Dr Susan Toto Touch… the post she wrote yesterday at 6:30 pm was deleted. And later she was no more.”

The investigation

Following Susan’s death, the family filed a complaint with Kabete Police Station. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has begun probing the case.

At present, no hospital or legal spokesperson has offered an official statement. The family insists she was in good health before the incident and demands clarity on the injections administered at home and in hospital.

Searching for the truth

Questions remain. Why was Susan removed from her home late at night? What substances were administered and under whose authority? What role did her husband and the attending medical staff play?

Accountability

Representatives for the hospital, Dr Onyancha, or Allois Ngure have yet to respond to requests for comment. Kenya’s medical and legal standards require informed consent for treatment. Allegations of forced medical procedures are taken seriously. In similar past cases, investigations have sometimes led to criminal charges but some resulted in findings of no wrongdoing, depending on medical justification and consent forms.

What’s next

Investigators must examine medical records, interview witnesses and analyse the audio recording and deleted posts. The family seeks a full inquest or coroner’s report and an independent medical review. They want accountability for all involved.

Susan’s final public words stressed autonomy and respect: “I had no right to… call anyone… Every patient has a right.” Her death has sparked a fierce debate over the rights of mental health patients, family authority and medical consent in Kenya.
