Discover Why People Are Pretending to be AI on TikTok

There is a new trend on TikTok where creators pretend to be AI on livestream and it has taken the app by storm in the last few days.

If you log onto the live streaming section of the app, you will find creators assuming the character of an AI and repeating certain phrases like ‘Ice Cream So Good’  while asking their audience to gift them.

The trend, referred to as NPC livestreams is believed to have been started by Japanese TikToker Nautecoco who said that she was experimenting. NPC refers to a non-player character in computer games. These are automated characters in a videogame and their role is to provide the illusion of life and bustling city life in the games.

The trend started becoming a trend for creators after a creator named Pinkydoll went viral on Twitter and the people could not understand what she was doing. Although Pinkydoll attracted the most attention at first for her streams, Twitter users soon found that other TikTokers were engaging in the same activity. It has been estimated that Pinkydoll makes more than 2000 dollars per live stream, acting as NPC.

Most of the creators jumping on the trend are speculated to be making lots of money as during the livestreams, viewers gift them to control their actions. The gifts given by viewers can be transformed into real cash by the creators. TikTok allows its creators to monetize their platform through gifts where creators receive 50% of the value of each gift the giver would have paid while delivering it to them. The gifts can be various virtual items, from fruits to diamonds. In light of this, the sum of money that is credited to a creator’s account only depends on the volume and kind of presents that they receive.
