Africa is slowly making its mark on the film industry with more and more opportunities coming up.
Netflix, Multichoice and ShowMax have been able to create original African films that have gotten great engagement not only in African but globally, from crime, reality shows, drama and even comedy, from countries like Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria.

These are the five African movies to include in your 2023 to-watch list;
Mzuka
A story about a talented man who has dreams of becoming a rapper but has financial struggles that make it hard for him to achieve his dreams. The movie showcases how difficult it can be for talented Kenyans to be recognized and to have a career due to their talents.
Goodbye Julia
This is a fictional tale that is set in Sudan’s political unrest that explores societal prejudices and discrimination but also speaks to the serious need for a solution to the country’s division. Mohamed Kordofani made this his debut film and got to win the Freedom Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was remarkably the first Sudanese film to be part of the festival’s selection.
Bravo Burkina
It is the story of two refugees who settle in Italy. The film got recognized at the New African Film festival and Sundance Film Festival. Through the film you can see a great play between music and art. Wale Oyediji has a background in both music and design and both can be seen immaculately in the film.
Gangs of Lagos
The first Nigerian movie on Prime video was sure to get a lot of attention. The movie is a crime drama about three friends who rise through the ranks of one of the city’s most violent gangs. It has received its fair share of controversy due to many reasons including the display of the Euo masquerade. Directed by Jade Osiberu and showcases high case performance from like of Tobi Bakre, Iyabo Ojo and Chike.
Shimoni
A film by the talented Angela Wanjiku Wamai that is about a former school teacher struggling to fir into society after he is released from prison. It got recognized in the US this year at the New African Film Festival and won the Bronze Stallion at the Fespaco.
