Muslims from various parts of the country prepare to kickstart the Holy month of Ramadhan, which incorporates fasting and prayer.

The Holy month of Ramadhan is set to start on Thursday, March 23 after Sheik Sukyan Hasan, the deputy chief Kadhi announced the moon being spotted in some parts of the country. The fasting and prayer period will last about 29 days.

In the spirit of the holy month of Ramadhan, the Muslim leaders have called for negotiation talks between President William Ruto and Azimio La Umoja party leader Raila Odinga. Addressing fellow Kenyans, in a press release, the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) said that the current feuds between the President and opposition leader were bringing more harm than good to the country.

The council’s chairman, Hassan Ole Naado who spoke during the release asked President Ruto and hon. Raila to hold talks rather than send each other messages. He encouraged the leaders to seek God’s guidance in settling their differences.

“They continuously amplify political rhetoric that is driving more and more people into disillusionment. Without a doubt, the resultant tension, which is increasing as the days go by, will result in anarchy if lessons from the past are anything to go by,” Hassan said.

Naado also said that the political heat being currently experienced in the country is making Kenyans disillusioned and unstable. His sentiments come at a time when the opposition coalition has set to hold weekly mass protests, on Mondays and Thursdays.

He asked Muslims should use this time to pray for the country and the issues affecting Kenyans.

Muslim leaders from the coastal region echoed the council’s chair, where they asked Raila to postpone the protests and urged the two leaders to settle their differences the right way.

The month of Ramadhan is marked as the 9th month in the Muslim calendar. Muslim leaders have called out to the Muslim faithful to maintain peace and calm during their fast, all the while steering clear of anything that would interfere with the fast of Ramadhan.
