A timely return to sports sponsorship by Sportpesa ahead of the Cape Town Sevens series this weekend.
Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karauri has confirmed, on Friday, the sponsorship deal with Kenya Rugby Union (KRU). In a brief statement, the CEO confirmed, “Yes, our partnership with rugby is back.”
On Friday, the Kenya Sevens Team (Shujaa) was presented with the Sportpesa branded jersey at their hotel in Cape Town. Kenya Sevens Strength and Conditioning coach Geoffrey Kimani shared the news on Facebook, with the caption, “Change comes…new kit, “Thank you @SportPesa, @Kenya Sevens, timely and much appreciated.”
Following a prolonged tax dispute, Sportpesa withdrew sports sponsorship in 2019 despite sealing a 5-year deal worth Ksh 607m. The good news comes at a time when the Kenya Rugby Union is facing financial setbacks and this will be a huge relief for the players ahead of the tournament.
Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman Oduor Gangla has however noted, that more information on the deal will be announced during the launch on Thursday next week. According to Nation.Africa, Shujaa have experienced delayed allowances for the past two months.

Cape Town is the third leg of the 2022/23 World Rugby Sevens Series. Kenya have been placed 14th, with six points. Kenya finished last at the Hong Kong Sevens but improved to 11th at the Emirates Dubai Sevens last weekend.
