President Vladimir Putin will not attend the G20 summit, involving leaders from a Group of 20 nations in Bali next week, Putin will be represented by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Putin might take part by video conference though “the format of (his) participation is being worked out,” Russia’s state news agency RIA reported, citing a diplomat in the Russian embassy in Indonesia.
Pressure has been there to remove Russia from the group due to the ongoing war with Ukraine, but Indonesia has resisted saying it does not have the authority to do so without consensus among members.
Mediation between global powers has been going on with the Indonesian President Joko Widodo leading them.
This will be the first meeting of the group after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia in what Putin terms a “special military operation.”
Indonesia has also invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has said he will not take part if Putin does and was expected to join virtually.

U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to join other world leaders at the summit which starts on Nov. 15.
“The G20 is not meant to be a political forum. It’s meant to be about economics and development,” President Joko Widodo said.
The summit comes at time when most countries in the world have a high inflation rate due to the Ukraine-Russia war.
