A major boost has been announced.
Kenyan content creators are set to gain new opportunities after ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, unveiled plans to launch an artificial intelligence-powered creator platform in Kenya.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by ICT and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo during an official visit to Beijing.
New Platform to Be Based in Kenya
The platform, known as Tazama, will be established in Kenya through a partnership between Volcano Engine, ByteDance’s cloud computing and AI division, and a local Kenyan company.
According to Kabogo, the project is intended to help creators earn more from their work while expanding their reach beyond Kenya.
“The firm and Volcano Engine, ByteDance’s cloud and AI arm, will base the creator platform Tazama here in Kenya, giving our young people the AI tools, localisation support and payment systems to earn from their talent and reach China and other global markets from home,” Kabogo said.
Global Audience to Be Reached

New opportunities are expected to be created for Kenyan creators through direct access to international audiences. The platform is expected to connect local talent with users in China and other global markets.
Kabogo said the initiative would also help introduce African culture to new audiences abroad.
“It is a genuine cultural exchange. Just as our creators gain access to global platforms, African stories, music and content will reach audiences in China,” he said.
Local Languages to Be Supported
African-language content will be supported on the platform. Kiswahili will be the first language included. More local languages are expected to follow as the platform expands.
The move is intended to allow creators to produce content in familiar languages while growing their international audience.
New Income Opportunities Expected

Thousands of young people are expected to benefit from the project. Content creation has become an important source of income for many Kenyans in recent years.
Government figures show that payouts to Kenyan digital creators have already surpassed KSh1 billion, reflecting the rapid growth of the country’s creator economy.
The new platform is expected to strengthen those opportunities by introducing improved payment systems and digital tools.
Kenya’s Digital Ambitions Expanded
The partnership forms part of the government’s wider plan to position Kenya as a regional technology and innovation hub.
Officials also expect the platform to support tourism by showcasing Kenya’s landscapes, culture and heritage to audiences around the world.
As global technology companies continue to expand their presence in Africa, Kenya is seeking to attract more digital investment while creating new opportunities for its growing creative industry.
