The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has announced the withdrawal of a retail electricity tariff review application that had been submitted by Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) on March 31, 2026.
In a statement issued on June 3, 2026, Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said the decision followed consultations within government and engagements with key stakeholders across the energy sector.
The move means that current electricity tariffs will remain unchanged, offering relief to households, businesses, and industries that had expressed concerns about potential increases in power costs.
According to the Ministry, the withdrawal was guided by the need to maintain a sustainable energy sector while protecting consumers from increased costs.
“The decision reflects the need to buttress a sustainable energy sector while protecting households, businesses, and industries from cost escalation,” the statement said.
Legal Process Governing Electricity Tariff Reviews
The Ministry clarified that any future review of electricity tariffs must comply with the provisions of the Energy Act, 2019.
Under the law, tariff adjustments can only be considered after a comprehensive process that includes the submission of an application to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), technical evaluations, stakeholder consultations, and public participation.
“The law further requires that electricity tariff setting be guided by the principles of transparency, fairness, cost recovery, consumer protection, and the long-term reliability and sustainability of power supply,” the Ministry stated.
Following the withdrawal of the application, all existing retail electricity tariffs will remain in effect unless a future review is conducted through the legally prescribed regulatory process.
The Ministry emphasized that the decision will not affect the delivery of electricity services across the country.
“Consumers and businesses should continue to enjoy uninterrupted access to electricity under the current tariff structure,” the statement noted.
The withdrawal of the tariff review application provides certainty for consumers and businesses at a time when affordability remains a key concern.
