Ebola Alert: Americans Exposed as DR Congo Outbreak Raises Global Concern

At least six Americans have been exposed to Ebola during a fast-moving outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, raising fresh concern among global health officials.

The World Health Organization has classified the outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern, as authorities in Congo report roughly 350 suspected cases and 91 deaths. The figures, while still being verified, point to a growing crisis in the country’s eastern Ituri province.

Details surrounding the Americans remain limited. One is believed to be showing symptoms, while three others are said to have had high-risk contact. It is not yet clear whether any have tested positive for the virus.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed it is assisting with the “safe withdrawal” of a small number of citizens affected by the situation, but declined to provide specifics. Officials have also sought to reassure the public that the risk to the United States remains low.

Behind the concern is the strain itself. The outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo variant of Ebola, a form of the virus for which there are no approved vaccines or targeted treatments. That reality has heightened the urgency of containment efforts.

Neighbouring Uganda has reported two confirmed cases and one death, underscoring fears of cross-border spread in a region where movement is often fluid.

Health agencies are now working to limit that risk. The WHO has urged countries in the region to step up screening at borders and strengthen surveillance in both communities and health facilities. Rwanda has already tightened checks along its frontier with Congo, while Nigeria says it is closely monitoring developments.

The United States has issued its highest-level travel warning, advising against all travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to reports, American officials are exploring options to move those exposed to a controlled quarantine setting, possibly outside the region, though no plan has been formally confirmed.

Despite the alarm, global health authorities have been careful in their language. The WHO says the situation, while serious, does not yet meet the threshold of a pandemic. Still, it warns that the number of cases could be higher than currently reported and that the outbreak may expand if not contained quickly.

Lessons from the past loom large. The West Africa Ebola epidemic between 2014 and 2016 infected more than 28,000 people and claimed over 11,000 lives, spreading across borders and reaching as far as Europe and the United States.

Public health experts say basic measures remain critical. Jean Kaseya, director general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, warned against practices that can accelerate transmission, particularly during burials.

“We don’t want people infected because of funerals,” he said, noting that traditional rites involving close contact with the deceased had fuelled earlier outbreaks.
