In a significant political development, Kenya’s ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have signaled a potential political realignment following a high-level consultative meeting held on April 23, 2026.
The meeting brought together the UDA Steering Committee and the ODM Central Management Committee, marking one of the clearest indications yet of structured engagement between the two major parties.
A key resolution from the meeting was the directive for both parties’ chairpersons to spearhead continuous and structured consultations across their respective organs.
The move is aimed at strengthening collaboration and identifying areas of mutual political and governance interest.
The discussions are expected to build consensus on national priorities while laying the groundwork for what leaders described as a “formal coalition of equals.”
Proposal for Broad-Based Management Committee
In a major outcome of the talks, party leaders agreed to establish a Broad-Based Management Committee.
The proposed body will include party leaders, selected Cabinet Ministers, and both Majority and Minority Leaders in Parliament.
Its mandate will be to coordinate and align legislative and executive functions within government, with the goal of enhancing efficiency, coherence, and service delivery to citizens.
President William Ruto, who also serves as UDA Party Leader, and Oburu Oginga, representing ODM leadership, reaffirmed their commitment to dialogue and unity.
The engagement between UDA and ODM signals a potential shift from adversarial politics toward consensus-building for two outfits that have had an openly turbulent realtionshipwith each other in the last few days.
While details of a formal coalition remain under discussion, the structured consultations and proposed joint committee point to deeper cooperation in governance.
