The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a Heavy Rainfall Advisory warning of intensified rains across several regions between April 22 and April 27, 2026.
According to the advisory released under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, the expected rainfall will range from moderate to heavy, with a 33 percent to 66 percent probability of occurrence.
Regions Expected to Be Most Affected
The advisory highlights several high-risk counties, particularly along the Coast and in Northeastern Kenya.
Counties expected to experience the heaviest rainfall include Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, and Garissa. Parts of Wajir, Mandera, Taita-Taveta, Kitui, and Makueni are also likely to be affected.
Rainfall accumulation is projected to exceed 20mm within 24 hours, especially in coastal and lowland regions.
In addition to heavy rainfall, the department has warned of gusty winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s).
Along the coastline, sea waves could surpass 2 meters, posing a significant risk to maritime activities. Agencies such as the Kenya Maritime Authority and Kenya Ports Authority have been alerted.
Flood Risks and Safety Concerns
Residents in affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant due to the heightened risk of flooding and flash floods, particularly in low-lying and downstream areas.
The government has issued precautionary measures to minimize risk during the rainy period as authorities, including the Kenya Red Cross and the National Disaster Operations Centre, remain on standby to respond to emergencies.
Residents are advised to avoid walking or driving through moving water, as even shallow floods can be dangerous.
