The Government of Ghana has formally summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa, Mr. Thando Dalamba, following renewed xenophobic incidents reportedly targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 23, 2026, authorities confirmed that the envoy was called in to address growing concerns over harassment and intimidation captured in widely circulated viral videos.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, expressed strong concern over the treatment of law-abiding foreign nationals.
He cited a troubling incident in KwaZulu-Natal, where a Ghanaian resident was confronted, asked to prove his legal status, and told to leave the country and “fix his own country.”
The Minister emphasized that such actions undermine the dignity and rights of individuals legally residing in South Africa and warned that they threaten peaceful coexistence.
Rising Tensions Spark Safety Concerns
According to the statement, follow-up reports indicate escalating tensions, with some foreign nationals being advised to remain indoors for their safety.
While no fatalities or injuries have been reported in the current wave of incidents, Ghana recalled past xenophobic attacks in South Africa that resulted in deaths and destruction of property.
The government stressed the urgent need to prevent a recurrence of such violence.
Minister Ablakwa highlighted the deep historical relationship between Ghana and South Africa, referencing Ghana’s support during the anti-apartheid struggle. He pointed to the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah and Ghana’s role in advocating for African liberation.
He noted that xenophobic actions contradict the principles of African unity and solidarity, urging citizens across the continent to reject division and hostility.
In response, the South African envoy acknowledged the concerns and indicated that authorities in South Africa are actively monitoring the situation and taking steps to restore calm and hold perpetrators accountable.
