NAIROBI — In a solemn ceremony at the Kenya Army headquarters in Nairobi on Thursday, Lieutenant General David Keter officially took the reins as the 24th Commander of the Kenya Army.
His appointment follows a top-level military reshuffle announced last week by President William Ruto. The decision, made on the advice of the Defence Council, signals a fresh chapter for Kenya’s armed forces.
Keter steps in for Lieutenant General David Tarus, who has been redeployed to the National Defence University-Kenya, where he will now serve as Vice Chancellor.
Handing over the service flag a symbol of command Tarus spoke warmly of his successor. “I’m truly delighted to hand over leadership to Lt Gen Keter,” he said. “Your experience across various roles in the Defence Forces has prepared you to lead in these complex times.”
Tarus urged the troops to rally behind the new commander, stressing the importance of unity. “Support him fully. Mission success depends on all of us working together.”
In a heartfelt farewell, Tarus thanked the soldiers he led, praising their loyalty, discipline, and commitment. “You have always put Kenya first,” he said. “I am proud of every one of you.”
A Familiar Face, A New Role
Before his elevation, Keter was the Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics a senior post at Defence Headquarters. Known for his calm leadership and technical grasp of military operations, he now becomes one of the most influential figures in Kenya’s defence structure.
In his first address as Army Commander, Keter paid tribute to his predecessor’s impact. “Lt Gen Tarus has helped shape the Army we see today,” he said. “His leadership has laid a solid foundation. I am honoured to build on it.”
He promised to lead with integrity and openness. “I will work closely with each of you,” he told the soldiers. “We must listen, collaborate, and prepare because readiness is everything.”
Keter said he would prioritise training, equipment, and troop welfare. “You are the backbone of this Army,” he said. “Your courage and commitment inspire me.”
Eyes on the Future
Keter’s rise comes at a time when the region faces shifting security threats from border tensions to counterterrorism operations. His leadership will likely shape how the Kenya Army responds to these evolving challenges.
Among those attending the change-of-command ceremony were Deputy Army Commander Major General Mohamed Hassan, senior officers, formation commanders and ranks from all units.
In military tradition, such handovers are more than symbolic. They reflect continuity and trust.
