LONDON — Kenya Airways has officially launched direct flights between London Gatwick and Nairobi, opening a new air route that is expected to strengthen trade, tourism, and diplomatic relations between Kenya and the United Kingdom. KQ in a statement ”After a warm welcome and a successful touchdown at London Gatwick yesterday, our inaugural return flight to Nairobi marked a new chapter in our journey.

The inaugural return flight departed Gatwick on Thursday evening, following a symbolic flag handover ceremony. Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir handed the Kenyan flag to Captain Paul Njoroge, marking the official return journey to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The ceremony took place at London Gatwick Airport and was attended by Principal Secretary Teresia Mbaika, Gatwick’s Chief Commercial Officer Jonathan Pollard, Kenya’s Deputy Head of Mission in the UK Amb. Edwin Afande, and Kenya Airways General Manager for Europe, Asia & MEGI Tom Reeves.

Captain Paul Njoroge, who also serves as the airline’s Director of Flight Operations, led the flight crew. He was joined by First Officer Patrick Chemirmir, Flight Pursers Monica Yator and Anette Muthengi, and a full complement of cabin staff.

The new route provides a direct air link between the UK’s second-busiest airport and Nairobi, a key regional hub in East Africa. It is part of Kenya Airways’ broader strategy to expand its European network and increase passenger and cargo capacity along high-demand corridors.

“Our return to Gatwick reflects our commitment to connect Kenya to key global markets,” a Kenya Airways spokesperson stated, emphasizing the airline’s focus on improving accessibility for business travelers, tourists, and the Kenyan diaspora in the UK.

The move is expected to complement existing Kenya Airways services from London Heathrow, offering passengers more options and flexibility.

Industry observers say the new route could play a role in boosting bilateral trade. The UK remains one of Kenya’s top export markets, particularly for tea, flowers, and fresh produce. The increased flight frequency is also expected to benefit the tourism sector by attracting more British travelers to Kenya’s national parks and coastal destinations.

This launch marks the latest milestone for Kenya Airways as it seeks to recover from pandemic-related disruptions and reinforce its status as a leading African carrier.
