George Rubiri takes over as chair at KAM motorcycle sub-sector

George Rubiri Elected to Lead Motorcycle Sub-Sector at KAM

NAIROBI — The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) has named George Rubiri as the new chair of its motorcycle sub-sector. Rubiri, the General Manager of Car & General (Trading) Limited, takes over from Alvin Mageto, who served in the role since 2021.

The announcement was made during the sub-sector’s annual general meeting in Nairobi. The role, which is voluntary, carries a two-year term and may be renewed once through re-election.

KAM Chief Executive Officer Tobias Alando outlined the responsibilities Rubiri will take on. “George will offer strategic direction, review sector performance annually, and report to the KAM Board through the Secretariat. He will also represent the sector in key forums and channel critical matters to the advisory committee for resolution,” Alando said in a statement.

Rubiri acknowledged the significance of the industry and thanked his predecessor for the foundation laid over the past four years. “First, I want to thank Alvin Mageto for his dedication and commitment. I believe I can build on that progress and help steer the sector forward,” Rubiri said.

He emphasized the role motorcycles play in Kenya’s economy. “The motorcycle industry is essential to our country’s transport network and economic activity. It cannot be ignored. We must work as a unit to make sure it continues to deliver value,” he added.

Car & General, Rubiri’s company, was among the earliest firms to introduce two and three-wheeler transport models in Kenya, laying the groundwork for what would later become the boda boda movement. Today, motorcycles provide daily transport and job opportunities for thousands across the country.

Founded in 1959, KAM represents Kenya’s industrialists and manufacturers. It advocates for industry interests, supports growth and investment, and serves as a link between the government and the private sector. The motorcycle sub-sector remains one of the fastest-growing segments in Kenya’s transport and automotive industries.

Rubiri now takes charge at a time when the motorcycle sector is expanding rapidly, driven by increased demand for low-cost transport and last-mile delivery services. Industry players hope his leadership will help address regulatory, safety, and import challenges affecting operators and manufacturers.
