Starlets eye victory against South Sudan in Cecafa clash

Starlets Seek Third Straight Win in Cecafa, Face Struggling South Sudan Today

DAR ES SALAAM — Kenya’s Harambee Starlets will take on South Sudan today at 4:00 p.m. in their third group-stage match of the Cecafa Women’s Championship at the Azam Complex in Chamazi. The Starlets are chasing a perfect run and a spot in Saturday’s potential title decider against hosts Tanzania.

Under head coach Beldine Odemba, the Kenyan side has posted two commanding wins — a 3-0 opener against Burundi and a 4-0 shutout of defending champions Uganda. The Starlets are level on six points with Tanzania, who have also won both of their matches.

South Sudan, in contrast, has suffered two heavy defeats. The team lost 4-0 to Tanzania in their opening match and then fell 5-0 to Uganda, leaving them at the bottom of the table with no goals scored and nine conceded.

A win today would keep Kenya on course for the top spot in Group A and set up a high-stakes clash with Tanzania on Saturday. That match is expected to determine who lifts the Cecafa title.

Both Kenya and Tanzania are using the regional tournament as preparation for the upcoming 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers. Morocco will host the continental tournament next month.

Today’s Cecafa double-header will conclude with the 7:00 p.m. match between Tanzania and Uganda at the same venue.

Kenya’s solid goal difference and defensive form have made the Starlets one of the tournament favorites. A third consecutive clean sheet would further solidify their position heading into the final round of matches.
